Two little girls were tucked all snug in their beds, with visions of germs alight in their heads.
Gross!
My sweet girls were doing their best to fight the germs that had been racking their bodies for four long and crappy days. Drinking their liquids, washing their hands, resting and sleeping.
I was doing my utmost to help them. Dosing tylonel, making soup, doling out Popsicles, prescribing ginger ale, worrying...feeling helpless to help my coughing sick babies.
Finally by 11pm at night, all was quiet. I had done all I could for the day and it was time to turn in. I felt helpless.

Then I spotted the mighty Lysol can.
I had already scrubbed every counter, wiped down the floors, but perhaps a good spray of Lysol on those door knobs and light switches before I went to bed would be just the thing.
A big fat spray to KILL all those big bad germs.
A big fat spray to KILL all those big bad germs.
Pssssst
Psssst
Pssssst
Take that you big bad germs.
Die virus die.
Psssst.
Then cutting through the silence of my blissfully quiet home was a wailing siren.
A screech.
A BLARE.
A screech.
A BLARE.
ModernDad came screaming down the hall!
It was the Carbon Monoxide Detector?
WTH?
He tore the batteries out and threw them on the floor.
Could it be?
I dashed to my trusty computer and googled.
Yep.
Lysol can SET OFF a carbon monoxide detector.
I'm leaving that baby unplugged for a week!
If I have to choose between fighting the scary H1N1 OR the remote possibility of invisible gasses I'm tackling germs this week.

Note to all other Germaphobe Mommies out there...Lysol and Carbon Monosixde Dectors...they don't mix baby!

That must have seemed like a screaming emergency, we always throw a fit when our goes off ott, or the smoke detector.
Secretia
OMG, that must have sacred the hell out of you having that alarm come on.
I'm with you, go with fighting the germs at least for this week.
Hugs to your little ones, I hope they are feeling better soon.
Hope they feel better! Didn't know that Lysol set of those detectors!
That is awesome information. Hope they are feeling better soon.
WOW. Who would have known????
I hope the girls are feeling better soon.
PS. I do this with lysol too...don't forget to hit the phones with it too. ;)
OMG! I've never heard of such a thing. Thanks for the heads up. I, too, would be leaving the batteries out for a while, and spray away!
Really that is great to know...
I love Lysol! On door nobs, phones, remotes, keyboards, toilets, garbage. If only I could spray other people. LOL. Hope your little ones get better soon!
Wow. I'd have never guessed that. I love my Lysol, so I would never give it up either! CO be darned!
Please don't take this the wrong way as I adore you and would probably do the same in your shoes, but I somehow can't help but agree with this:

IMO we are making our children weak by being over-protective... too much of a good thing (sanitation) is a bad thing in the end :(
Living here in China, I have often thought, "My kingdom for a can of lysol!" I used to be a huge germaphobe thanks to my years as a Zoology major studying parasites. I seem to have gotten over that lately, it simply became a losing battle over here. On the positive side, I bet my immune system has never been stronger than it is right now. I've been exposed to germs I never dreamed of.
I had no idea lysol could set off detectors, good to know!
So sorry your babies have been sick, hope they feel better very soon!!! And that you keep healthy, too.
I didn't know Lysol would make the alarms go off, thanks for letting us know!
Hope the family feels better soon!
I hope the girls feel better soon!
I don't get that...it seems totally random. How is it that Lysol can set off the alarm? Technology is weird.
I hate my carbon monoxide detector...it's so loud and has a nice big button on the front for "testing" that exactly at toddler height. I only keep it plugged in to make my mother happy!
I have a sick kid too. Guess I won't be using the Lysol! Although, I must admit, I'm tempted to experiment; maybe that's a good way to test the detector.
Good story...don't know whether to keep my mouth hanging open with surprise, or to laugh!
LOL!
Take care of the babies.
Wow! Who would have thought! Good to know!
I never knew that Lysol could do that! I am not too much of a germaphobe, but actually trying to pay better attention to it these days in order to ward off the H1N1 from our house.

How are the little ones now? I spend my life using antiseptic hand gel, antiseptic wipes cleaining down phones etc, looking menacingly at the other commutors on the bus when they sneeze into their hands and then promptly use every hand rail in sight. Maybe I should just give them a good spray down with our Lysol equivalant. Do you think they would get the message then. ;0)
Well, don't ya know. The old saying is true after all.
You learn something new every day.
Hope everyone feels better soon. It's going around.
Well, you degermed the place and learned something new, I call that a success (and thanks for teaching me something new too!).
Good to know girlie, and I am with you...Lysol it all baby!!!
OK is this where I act like a complete a$$ and ruin your day and tell you that H1N1 is not killed by Lysol? And that you need to be careful when spraying around your girls while they are sick due to it's assault on the lungs?
Hmmm, yeah it looks that way.
Here's what you do hon, I won't leave you high and dry...
BLEACH BLEACH BLEACH! Sure, you may all have the skin tone of a Cullen by the time you're done dousing the house but, at least the batteries are back in and you don't have to worry about Carbon Monoxide!
I think bleach is a 1/10 parts ratio with water, you may need to google that...
This is all from a self-proclaimed Lysolholic, btw...I prefer the crisp, clean scents.
Well I learned something new today! Though I don't belive I even have a Carbon Monoxide detector in my house.
:::hangs head in shame:::
Hope your kids feel better soon!
Wow, I had no idea. That is crazy! Thanks for the information!
And now I know
Really? I have never heard of such a thing! But keep on killing the germs!
Ha! Good to know. Hope all at your house will be healthy soon.
Well - thanks for the tip! Actually, try to boost the kid's immunity - give them lots of water and natural yoghurt!
My child came home from school saying they learned to cough and sneeze into their elbows with Germie Wormie, and I was totally taken aback. I always used my hands. But I went to the website, and now I get it, hands touch, elbows don't!! Kids can touch up to 300 surfaces in 1/2 an hour, and they hate to wash their hands. This is a simple thing that can make a huge difference.
Hi Modern Mom,
Hope you had a great weekend but wanted to let you know that
You've Been Tagged!
Hope you will swing by to see what it's about and join in. Would love to read what you come up with!
Deb
Good lands, whoda thunk? So did it wake the whole house?
wow!! really.. thats just flat our scary and weird!!
makes me wonder what may or may not be in Lysol!!
hope your girls get to feeling better soon..
That has happened to us before as well. Our gas detector was so sensitive that our dog would walk by it and fart and the damn thing would go off! Yeah, umm.... I WISH I was kidding about that one. Sadly, I'm not!
Good to know! Hope everyone feels better soon.
Oh my gosh that is too funny! Yeah, I'd take anything that will kill H1N1, too!
Good to know! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, that's crazy! I can't believe Lysol can set those things off, I would have freaked!
I had no idea. Hope your girls are feeling all better soon.
That cracks me up! I Had no idea it would set off a carbon minoxide detector! How funny! I know how you feel though - germs gotta DIE!
Ahhhhh, yes...the Lysol. I have a can of it on my kitchen counter right now. Stepson came down with H1N1 just yesterday. I love the little booger, but as soon as his dad got home today, I took a shower and threw the clothes I was wearing in the wash. When his mom picks him up later, I will be spraying everything he touched with Lysol!
I never would have guessed that. Wow, that had to be a little scary and now makes me wonder what exactly is in a can of Lysol?
That is so funny.. thanks for filling us in. I definitely didn't know that!!!!
Wow. Who knew?
Carbon monoxide detectors and golf cart battery chargers also do not mix. Especially when you forget that the battery has been charging for three days...
Just stopped by to say thanks for visiting my blog. Come on by any time at all!
